Maintaining a Dishwasher

From , former About.com Guide

Use It

Letting it sit idle and unused is the worst thing for a dishwasher. The water held in the pump will eventually evaporate, letting the seals dry up. This will guarantee leaks the next time the unit is used. So use your dishwasher frequently.

Keep It Clean

It may seem counter-intuitive to think that a dishwasher, with it’s consistent flow of hot water and heavy detergents could become dirty. Despite this, mold and mildew can accumulate around door seals and the float.

  • Check the seals and if you notice build up clean them with detergent.
  • Occasionally lift the float up and check for dirt. A dirty float will increase the water level in the unit, resulting in a leak.

  • Check the sprayer arms for blockage. Small pieces of plastic or glass can become imbedded in the sprayer holes. Remove foreign objects with tweezers.

Load It Correctly

If you notice that your dishes aren’t coming out as clean as you would expect the problem may not be with the dishwasher, but with you. Proper loading techniques will ensure that the unit will perform at it’s optimal level.

  • Place items in both racks. This will allow water to hit all surfaces evenly.
  • Don’t place glasses over tines (pegs), put them between. This will let them lean towards the water spray. It will also improve drying by letting more water slid off surfaces.

  • Don’t allow silverware to bunch together. Load forks and spoons with some handles up and others down.
