Broken Washer or Frozen Pipes?

By January 7, 2014

Follow me on:

A washing machine that stops working in the middle of winter can be due to frozen pipes. Many laundry rooms are located near the outside walls of the house, so poor insulation can result in frozen water supply lines.

One thing to try before calling an appliance repair company is to check that the washing machine is getting water.

  1. turn off the supply valve to the washer
  2. disconnect the washing machine hose from the washing machine
  3. point the end of the water line into the washing machine tub
  4. and turn the water on

If water doesn't come out of the water supply line you may need to thaw a frozen pipe somewhere down the line.

Sometimes the washer itself might be frozen. It can occur in the pump. It happened to me, turned it on and heard a buzz from the motor. Had to take the panel off and remove the hoses from the pump. Took a day to thaw out.
