Fall is the time to once again check the insulation of pipes and fixtures in preparation for the cold weather. When shopping for water pipe insulation there are several things to consider:
1- Is it suited for the installation. Check that the product is cleared to be installed on hot/cold water pipes.
2- R-value of the insulation material. Will it be enough to prevent freezing in your climate?
3- The ease of installation. Sometimes the cost is higher for a product that is easier to install. It isn't just about making it easy either. If the insulation is too difficult to install it could end up being installed wrong and may not prevent freezing.
It is always easier to prevent frozen pipes than to repair freeze damage or thaw a frozen pipe.
