Catch hidden plumbing problems early by taking a peak under the kitchen sink from time to time. The closed cabinet doors and the dark corners can hide leaking and corroded plumbing. A minor leak may not become apparent until the cabinet is completely damaged.
To catch these problems early do a thorough inspection every few months.
Things to check for:
- Faucet Leaks - the faucet can leak under the sink without a visible leak above.
- Corroded Sink Strainers - the metal around the sink drain can break down over time and cause a leak under the sink.
- Corroded Garbage Disposal - the body of the garbage disposal can break down without visible signs above.
- Water Damage - look for signs of water damage on the wood at the base and sides of the cabinet. Sometimes a very small leak isn't easy to find, but if you know it is there you'll know to keep looking.
Also, consider protecting your cabinet from future water damage by installing linoleum tiles which is quick and inexpensive.
