More Cold Weather Worries

If despite your best efforts you end up with a frozen pipe what do you do? Hopefully you are lucky enough to become aware of the freeze before any water damage has occurred.

Frozen pipes can flood a home and cause water damage quickly if they go unchecked. Prevention is always the best way to avoid costly repairs, but sometimes they still aren't enough.

As long as there isn't a break in the pipe you can thaw frozen pipes and prevent damage, but you must act quickly.

Things to keep in mind:

  • Check that the pipe is not broken before you attempt to thaw it. Ice may be the only thing keeping the pipe from leaking.
  • Never use a torch or open flame of any sort to thaw frozen pipes. They present a serious fire hazard.
  • Remember that once a pipe freezes it is likely to do so again. A frozen pipe is a sign that some insulation is required.
