The Right Drain Snake For Your Clogged Drain

By June 26, 2011

Follow me on:

Several different drain snakes.

This weekend I found myself buying a couple of used drain snakes and realized that people often buy them without knowing how or when to use them. Since most clogged drains can be cleared with the right drain machine I thought I would go over some common machines and their uses.

Toilet Auger - This is one I recommend most people should purchase because it is the natural next step to clearing a toilet stoppage after trying a plunger.

Top Snake - This is the most versatile of the various drain snakes since it can be used on tubs, showers, sinks and washing machine stoppages.

Mini Rooter - This snake would be more of a rental for the average homeowner as it is mainly used on clean-outs and under sinks after the trap is removed.

Large Drain Machine - This is a large pipe clean-out machine; primarily for main line stoppages.

With this information you can select the correct drain snake for your particular needs. Drain snakes are powerful tools to help clear clogged drains. Knowing what each of the various drain snakes are used for is an important first step when working on a clogged drain.

Great overview of the machines. It would also be interesting to to talk about the different blades that can be attached and their uses.

Please be kind enough to respond. I am a senior citizen and called Roto Rooter for my problem and they want $200. to snake my pipe.
This is what happens. When I use my washing machine and the water starts to drain out, the toilet overflows and the water also comes up filling the bathtub.
Please tell me where you think the blockage is and how to fix it.
Much appreciation. Thank you.

Hi Norma, This sounds like a main line sewer stoppage. The only way to fix it is to have the sewer main snaked. First, figure out if you have a clean-out. Then call several plumbers and compare prices. Let them know if you have a clean-out or not so they can give you a more accurate price. You may want to try calling a smaller company (small yellow pages ad) and local plumbers since they can sometimes give you a much better price. If you have a clean-out and know someone who is handy you can rent a machine and snake it yourself.

You want to make sure that you unclog the right way. You can do a lot of damage if you dont do it right. Some things are really east to unclog. But some are really hard. Do your homework. Nice blog article. Thanks
