Sneaky Leak

Toilet tank

You suddenly notice a water leak coming from under the toilet. This is clearly the bowl wax leaking from under the toilet...or could be something else?

Before you pull out your tools and start a leak repair always take the time to do a bit of investigating. The water you see could be flowing to the base of the toilet from other places.

Possible source of the leak could be:

  • A seal higher up on the toilet
  • The water supply to the tiolet
  • A crack in the toilet

In a case I encountered the other day, an almost invisible crack in the toilet was the source of a leak. The water was collecting at the base of the toilet making it appear as if the bowl wax was leaking.
A cracked toilet tank
I have found cracks on the outside of the tank, inside the tank, and even in the toilet bowl. Most of these are very small hairline cracks that you really have to be looking for the find. In these cases I recommend replacing the entire toilet since you can't be sure the crack(s) don't leak.

So, next time you find a leak make sure to pay close attention because water can seep from the cracks.. even the smallest ones.
