Do you know how to turn off the gas in the event of a leak? If you suspect that you have a gas leak the safest thing to do is to turn off the gas right away and investigate later. Signs of a gas leak include the smell natural gas and hearing hissing or whistling near an appliance or a pipe.

Natural gas can be turned off at three locations:

  1. The Stove - If you can tell that the gas is leaking at the stove you can turn off the gas there.
  2. The Water Heater - If the gas leak appears to be at the water heater you can turn off just the supply to it.
  3. Gas Meter - If you can't trace the source or can turn off the gas to the appliance you can turn off the gas meter. Turning off the meter ensures that there isn't any more gas flowing into the home.

When the gas has been safely turned off you can contact your gas company to have the leak repaired.

  • If you have an especially large leak or you can't safely shut off the gas, evacuate the area and call the gas company or 911.
